Pilates for Osteoporosis
Why is Pilates so good for patients with Osteoporosis?
When you have a diagnosis of Osteoporosis or Osteopenia, it’s not always easy to know what type of exercises can be good for you. Pilates is a type of exercising that most people are safe to start with, even if they are beginners. What is important is checking that your teacher has the appropriate qualification, such as Body Control Pilates Bone Health level 3.
Pilates works with strengthening the muscles in a way that promotes a lengthened and aligned spine. Stronger muscles around the hips also help with balance, thus preventing unnecessary falls and potential fractures.
A knowledgeable Pilates teacher will pick out the exercises that are particularly beneficial for strengthening bones as well as muscles.
Feeling stronger and more secure in your own body gives greater confidence in trying out more moving and exercising - the more ways you move your body, the stronger you become!
Pilates also emphasises breathing in the movements, and expanding the rib cage. You also stay focused on the way that you move, which helps becoming aware of how small adjustments can improve posture.
