Osteopathy is a primary health care system, complementary to other medical practices. It is suitable for almost anyone and can contribute to the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions. Osteopaths primarily work through the neuro-musculo-skeletal system, mostly on muscles and joints, using holistic and patient-centred approaches.
A core principle behind osteopathy is the idea that the body is an integrated whole, and contains self-healing mechanisms that can be supported as part of the treatment. No part of the body works, or can be considered, in isolation. Relevant psychological and social factors also form part of the process of patient diagnosis.
Cranial Osteopathy is a subtle form of osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle pressure to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body. It is called 'cranial' because treatment often involves the head, although other parts of the body such as the spine and tailbone can also be involved.
Sports activities are a regular way of life for many of us now, and involve people from across all age groups, from those who have an avid interest to those who just wish to keep fit; from the elite professional to the casual participant. Many of the injuries are the result of overuse i.e. playing too hard and too often e.g. tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and biceps tendinitis, or from not warming up properly beforehand or from not warming down after exercise.
Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine that assists the body to heal itself. The remedies used are safe and are not chemical drugs. Homeopathy takes into consideration the wider holistic aspects of the patient’s life and situation, as well as their presenting symptoms.
Pilates is an exercise method, designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. Based upon an anatomical understanding of the body's muscular and skeletal systems, the Pilates teacher creates a comprehensive exercise programme for the client. Classes will focus on specific areas individually whilst using exercises that integrate the whole body to re-educate and restore it to optimum muscular and skeletal function.
Massage can be restorative, calming and peaceful. It can help circulation, drainage, and the softening of tissues. Massage can also help maintain the body in better condition, improve tone to injured muscle tissue and prevent injury.

At a time when poor diet, stress, modern technology and environmental pollution play a significant role in health, lifestyle and natural medicine is now of considerable importance. Based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feet which directly link to all the organs, glands and parts of the body, reflexology is the method of using the thumbs and fingers on these reflexes to relieve stress and tension and bring the body back into balance.

Friendly and professional
I have had a longstanding problem with my neck and after many other treatments, my doctor suggested I consult Emma Wightman, What a revelation and change she has brought to my condition. I now sometimes go months without a problem , and when I do have a recurrence a session or two with Emma usually cures it.
Emma is very professional int he way she conducts her consultations, but in a way very relaxed and friendly way, and I am very grateful to her.
Incredible
Tracey has been incredible and I have found the appointments invaluable. She has helped my back aches and pains 100% which is wonderful for me, a mum of two small children.
Outstanding!
Really competent and engaging session.
Put at ease
My reflexology session was both therapeutic and relaxing, Sarah was great - enthusiastic & knowledgeable and able to put me totally at ease.
So supportive
Amber has been so supportive, and has explained why my symptoms were occurring and what I could change to get rid of them - in less than two weeks, my sleep has improved, I have more energy and I’m definitely feeling less irritable! I’m already feeling more like my old self again.
Highly recommended
I was very lucky to be one of Olivia’s first patients. She is extremely good at her job and took a genuine interest in my situation and health, even after the consultations finished. Her advice and guidance changed my life and I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to improve their health and life.
Numerous health benefits
Anneli’s classes have contributed enormously to my general well-being, flexibility and core strength. Her meticulously structured small classes combined with her constant awareness of each student’s personal needs, affords a wonderful environment resulting in numerous health benefits. I can thoroughly recommended her super classes.

Headaches, migraine, back, neck or joint pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fibromyalgia – they’re just some of the common causes of chronic pain.

For decades, icing an injury has been a standard recommendation, especially following acute trauma like sprains or strains. However, recent evidence suggests that this approach may not be as effective as once thought. In fact, icing could actually delay recovery and hinder the body’s natural healing processes.

Ignoring this inner wisdom can lead to frustration. If you solely rely on external advice and it doesn’t work, it’s easy to blame your body for not responding as expected. This erodes your confidence, autonomy, and trust in your body’s innate ability to guide you. Over time, it may even diminish your capacity to make empowered decisions about your health.

Newborn baby abdominal discomfort
I took my 5 week old baby to see Emma to ease her abdominal discomfort and for a general check-over after a long labour. After just a few treatments she fed and winded more easily and cried less frequently. Emma has a gentle and skilful approach with babies. I also visited Emma for treatment for myself post-natally which helped me to feel stronger. I have and would recommend Emma to anyone, especially to those with newborns.
Sticky Ear Problem
After my 4 year son was diagnosed with having a sticky ear problem and referred to have Grommets fitted I sought Emma's advice. Emma treated him with a course of Cranial Osteopathy. Emma's gentle, reassuring approach was wonderful. I was surprised at how quickly we started to see improvements in his hearing and was totally flabbergasted yesterday to find out that his Glue Ear has cleared up, he no longer needs grommets and the consultant has discharged him! Thank you Emma x
Amazed by the immediate benefits for my Son
I am always impressed and amazed by the immediate benefits my son receives after every wonderful treatment with Emma. I have taken him to Emma since he was born. He didn't have any major conditions, apart from a slight Flat head, but I enjoyed the feedback Emma gave from when he was a small baby. He unfortunately had an infected eardrum which burst when he was 2 years old. A specialist in Harley Street suggested fitting grommets if his condition didn't improve. A few treatments with Emma however and he was quickly back to normal.
I have also seen the benefits of a treatment with Emma when I have taken him to see her after his vaccinations. He wasn't affected by them as Emma made sure his internal organs were able to deal with the 'virus' and pass it on through his system as soon as possible.
Absolutely superb
I had had ongoing problems with my left arm for a number of months. Emma and Tracey have worked to deal with my problems and their causes, and the improvement is very noticeable, and lasting. I am very pleased with the results and the ongoing 'maintenance' work.
My shoulders also hold a lot of tension and Tracey has really helped with that. I feel much better - my back, neck and shoulders are hugely improved.
I couldn’t recommend Emma enough
Emma was extremely approachable and clearly has a passion for her profession, particularly in the care of pregnant women, babies and children. SOP is a lovely, welcoming and friendly practice. It is in a quiet location - perfect for a relaxing osteopathy treatment for the whole family.
It was devastating to learn that one of my twin boys had Cystic Fibrosis just after I'd 1st seen Emma with them. I was desperate to be able to do something on top of conventional medication & physio to enhance the health of my son. This was something Emma was able to assist with and has done ever since. I see her every 2-3 months with my son. She has a lovely calm manner with both myself and my children and I feel these treatments have benefitted his health immensely. Emma also suggested seeing Lucinda Miller, the naturopath at SOP, to address the nutritional side of my son's condition, which has also been useful.
Treatments for all of the family
Our family have been visiting Emma at Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice since 2013 when our son was born, unfortunately requiring an assisted delivery. We wanted to ensure he was given the best opportunity for health and comfort from the start, and Emma did just that. His symptoms included a flat head at the back which Emma was very helpful on. Both our children have visited Emma since birth and have been relaxed, comfortable and much better able to cope with any colic, gripes or congestion following a treatment.
Their sleep patterns have also hugely benefited, with both children being much more settled after treatments. Osteopathic treatments have certainly helped both children to adjust to life in the world as babies, and continue to help give them the support their systems need to remain healthy into toddler and childhood.
I have also received a number of post-natal treatments from Emma which helped my return to strength and feeling of physical and mental well-being.
Incredibly relaxing
That was the most incredibly relaxing massage I think I have ever had. You have amazing hands and I feel like a different person – thank you so much!
Our son is calmer and more focused
Lucinda is an outstanding naturopath. Highly professional and with a warm and genuine approach she has been vital in our son’s health and return to being a highly sociable and happy boy. We started seeing Lucinda when our son’s gut healing programme plateaued on a grain-free diet. With her extensive knowledge combined with in-depth assessment and testing she has helped him make significant gains in the last 12 months using diet and nutritional supplementation.
He is calmer and more focused at home and school. He has friends and has started playing cricket, which he loves. More recently he has discovered a love of reading as his comprehension has come along in leaps and bounds. We can’t recommend Lucinda highly enough for all she has done for our son and our family.

I have had a longstanding problem with my neck and, after many other treatments, my doctor suggested I consult Emma Wightman. What a revelation and change she has brought to my condition. Six week MOT
A good friend recommended Emma to me after a painful neck condition failed to respond to treatment by another practitioner. Emma has a warm personality and was excellent at listening to my history and diagnosing gentle but effective treatment. Emma also encourages her patients to help themselves through simple exercises that reinforce her treatments. My condition improved after a few sessions and I now visit Emma for a six-weekly MOT. I believe this is a very modest investment in my personal health and well-being in the hands of an expert
Impressed from the beginning
I suffer with tension and discomfort across my left shoulder, back and down through my waist, all of which can be exacerbated by the stresses, ups and downs and general hectic nature of life. I was first treated by an osteopath for a sports injury in the early nineties in London. The immediate results convinced me of the holistic merits of osteopathy.
Now living in Winchester, I have been seeing Emma for treatment, on and off, for over 10 years. I was particularly impressed from the beginning by Emma’s approachable and understanding nature. But I’ve also become aware just how adept and skilful an osteopath she is in terms of treatment and advice. When I start to feel discomfort or pain, I know that it is time to see Emma – and she always delivers. I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending Emma and the Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice.
Put at ease
My reflexology session was both therapeutic and relaxing. Sarah was great – enthusiastic & knowledgeable and able to put me totally at ease.
I can thoroughly recommend
I have been having treatment from Emma since before Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice started. She is an excellent osteopath, as is Tracey who my husband and I have both had treatment with. All the staff are friendly and professional and I can thoroughly recommend them.
Sympathetic and knowledgable
From the very beginning I have been astounded by the profound effect that Osteopathy has had on me, not just physically but also mentally. I initially came to Emma for (what I thought were) issues unrelated to my fertility, but I soon realised that everything was connected and believe that Osteopathic treatment had a vital role to play in supporting my mind and body during the IVF process.
Emma is sympathetic and very knowledgeable. Her treatments are gentle yet powerful, and clearly very well-informed. I can't recommend her highly enough to anyone seeking support for women's health matters.
I was nervous before my visit
I would just like to write and thank you all at Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice ( SOP ) for all the treatment I have received for my back problem. I was quite nervous on my first visit but I found you all very friendly and welcoming, making me feel very much at ease. There is a relaxed comfortable feeling in the practice.
On my first visit with Emma, I had a thorough initial consultation, progressing to a detailed assessment of the actual problem ( a case of scoliosis ) the problem was identified very accurately in a calm, relaxed, logical order which in turn made me feel relaxed and at ease.
I received treatment for several months and I was always made to feel comfortable and at ease – never being pushed into doing the next stage of treatment until I felt happy. I always received thorough detailed explanations and I was amazed at how Emma could just identify the exact location of a particular problem, just by asking questions and then gently touching the problem area. It was as if she could see every muscle sinew, bone, ache and pain!
Getting to the root of the problem
Lucinda has a rare talent of instilling confidence, positivity & offers great reassurance. She takes time to listen empathically & get to the root of the problem & explains why certain natural options (food/supplements) will help heal you. I’ve recommended her to lots of people & will continue to do so!
Stress incontinence
I first saw Emma in November 2018 with stress incontinence problems having read about her treatment in the Forum magazine. I am in my early 60’s and have had three children. Over the last few years the strength of my pelvic floor has weakened, particularly after the menopause. Exercise, sneezing, coughing, laughing, shouting and sudden movements can bring on leakage which can be very embarrassing.
Emma initially gave me exercises and treatment on a weekly basis and now we meet about once a month. The symptoms have lessened and I am much more confident than I was. I continue to do my exercises regularly which helps to keep everything in check. Emma’s encouragement, her caring attitude, her ability to explain everything in detail and her professionalism has been enormously helpful and appreciated.
Pelvic Floor Strengthening
I first came across the Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice after reading an article by Emma Wightman, in the Test Valley Forum, about women’s health – the pelvis. It sounded positive and was interesting - so I booked an appointment. (I’d recently had some prolapse work done and my womb removed, in hospital, earlier in the year) My first impression of the Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice, and one which still remains, is that those who I have met there – Emma Wightman, Osteopath, and George on reception – is that they are authentically friendly. It is a very relaxing place to wait for appointment.
I have now been seen by Emma on a fairly regular basis since about September last year. I have a series of exercises (which vary) that I do about 4 times a week and with the help of the Squeezy app, (recommended by Emma) I manage to do my pelvic floor exercises more or less daily (I don’t know why, but the Squeezy App makes me do, and continue to do, the pelvic floor exercises – never before have I ever managed to keep doing them)
Chronic head pain
I was referred to Emma after 6 weeks of seeking treatment for chronic head pains. What started as a migraine resulted in a constant ache and sharp pains in my head. I was not able to work during this time and after 6 weeks of attending my GP on various occasions, being referred to a neurological specialist and undergoing an MRI scan, no one could tell me what was wrong. I have never suffered from such a debilitating health related issue. In desperation I had tried homeopathic and acupuncture treatments, routes I would never have tried normally – all to no avail.
After just one session with Emma I felt a massive change. After three sessions the head aches had stopped. I was almost disbelieving that Emma could have solved a problem which was blighting mine and my family’s lives with manipulation when the medical profession had spent 6 weeks without diagnoses, never mind cure.
Although it sounds over dramatised, Emma managed to treat a condition with no drugs or operations which was fast becoming life changing. I still take my health for granted but my experience a few years ago gave me a horrid insight into the world of ill health, a place I may have spent more time had it not been for Emma.
I was ill and so tired
Lucinda made me feel so well again after years of feeling ill and so tired my body always wanted to lie down. I will always remember how she helped me and the fact that I can run about busily once again is amazing and something I’d given up hope on.
Chronic back pain
I have suffered from chronic back pain for many years and tried many different therapists. Emma, however, is the best I have seen and has been able to help me in many ways. She is kind, gentle, reassuring and very understanding. I have also been having 1-1 Pilates with Anneli, who has worked with Emma to help me a great deal. Anneli is a brilliant teacher and so patient! It is lovely to be able to come to one place to have both treatments and exercise. The practice receptionists are delightful and will always do their best to find an appointment to suit you. I would have no hesitation in recommending this practice to anyone, whatever their problem.
