Do Men Do Pilates?
Pilates is a movement programme that was put together by Joseph Pilates, who initially taught it to injured soldiers in the First World War.
The movements are exact and controlled (Mr Pilates himself called it Contrology). The focus is on keeping your posture healthy and young, and moving your joints with ease.
Athletes like rugby players, rowers, tennis players and golf players all make sure they have Pilates included in their training programmes to avoid over-use injuries. Pilates helps keep their bodies aligned and strong.
The Pilates method can also be adjusted depending on the need, making it easier or harder. It can be both part of rehabilitation in the shorter term, and prevention of injury in the longer term.
So if you have a bad back, sore neck, stiff shoulders, clicky hips or knees that give way, can you still do Pilates? Absolutely!
There are plenty of men who have been coming to my Pilates for several years, and feel it helps them stay well. You are welcome to come along and give it a try!
Anneli, who also holds a BSc in Physiotherapy, thoroughly enjoys teaching Pilates as a way of helping people find good body movement.
